Personal Protection Dogs

A personal protection dog is a single-handler animal trained to deter, engage on command and disengage instantly. It is a lifestyle commitment as much as a security measure.

What a personal protection dog is

It is a socially neutral, obedient dog with verified nerve that accompanies its handler daily and can engage decisively when directed. It is not a guard dog left in a yard, and it is not a dog that reacts on its own judgement in public.

Presence alone resolves most situations. The overwhelming majority of value in a protection dog is deterrence, not deployment.

Training standard

Every dog we place at this level demonstrates off-lead obedience in public, a reliable out and recall from a live decoy, calm behaviour in cafés, vehicles and hotels, and controlled engagement in varied environments and low light.

  • Off-lead heel and recall in busy public environments
  • Engage and out on verbal command, verified repeatedly
  • Vehicle work: travel, exit on command, guard the vehicle
  • Neutrality with children, strangers and other dogs
  • Night, confined space and multi-person scenario work

Handover and support

Placement includes a multi-day handover, written maintenance schedule, quarterly refresher sessions in the first year and ongoing access to us. Without maintenance training, capability degrades within months.

Cost and commitment

Fully trained personal protection dogs in the UK typically range from £15,000 to £45,000 depending on age, pedigree, training level and proven capability. Beyond purchase, budget for insurance, secure housing, veterinary care and continuation training.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a personal protection dog cost?

Typically £15,000–£45,000 depending on training level, age and pedigree. Beware anything advertised far below that range as fully trained.

Can a protection dog live in the house with my family?

Yes. Correctly bred and trained protection dogs are neutral and calm at home; that is precisely the standard we work to.
