Family Protection Dogs

A family protection dog spends 99.9% of its life being a superb household companion. The remaining fraction is why you bought it — and the two must never conflict.

Temperament requirements

Family placements demand the highest temperament standard we apply. The dog must be unflappable around children, tolerant of handling, neutral to visitors and utterly clear-headed. Any dog showing sharpness, guarding of resources or nervousness is excluded.

Training focus

Household manners come first: settle, place, door discipline, calm greeting, no resource guarding, and reliable recall around family activity. Protection work is layered on top and is always handler-directed rather than autonomous.

  • Multi-handler obedience so adults in the home can control the dog
  • Settle and neutrality around children and visitors
  • Alert-bark on command and controlled deterrence
  • Engagement and out under handler direction only
  • Property and boundary awareness without territorial reactivity

Living with the dog

We teach the whole household, not just one person. Children learn simple rules, adults learn handling, and everyone learns the boundaries that keep the dog reliable — most notably that the dog is never encouraged to bark or posture for entertainment.

Which breeds suit family work

Working line German Shepherds and moderate Czech line shepherds are usually the best fit. High-drive KNPV Malinois can succeed in very active households but require considerably more work and structure.

Frequently asked questions

Are family protection dogs safe around children?

A correctly bred and trained one is, with normal supervision. Temperament screening is the deciding factor, and we are uncompromising about it.

Will the dog protect without being commanded?

Our dogs are trained to respond to handler direction and to natural, obvious threat. We do not train dogs to make autonomous decisions about strangers.
